๐Ÿ˜ท NHS Pharmacy First โ€“ Sore Throat Assessment & Treatment

๐Ÿฉบ Sore Throat (Pharyngitis) โ€“ NHS Service

A sore throat is a common condition caused by viral or bacterial infections. Symptoms may include pain when swallowing, a dry or scratchy throat, swollen tonsils, and fever.

๐Ÿ˜ท Many sore throats improve with selfโ€‘care and do not require antibiotics. Some bacterial infections may benefit from treatment following a clinical assessment.

๐Ÿฅ With the NHS Pharmacy First service, eligible patients can receive assessment, advice, and treatment directly from a pharmacist without needing a GP appointment.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Who Can Use This Service?

You may be eligible if:

โœ… You are aged 5 years or over

โœ… Your symptoms started within the last 7 days

โœ… You do not have severe breathing or swallowing difficulties

โœ… You are not severely unwell

๐Ÿฉบ A pharmacist will carry out a private consultation to confirm whether this service is suitable and what the best next step is for you.

๐Ÿ” Common Symptoms

A sore throat may present with:

๐Ÿ˜– Pain or discomfort when swallowing

๐Ÿ”ด Redness or swelling of the throat or tonsils

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Fever, shivers, or fluโ€‘like symptoms

๐Ÿฆ  Swollen glands in the neck

โšช White patches or pus on the tonsils

Because many sore throats are viral, antibiotics are not always the right option โ€” a clinical assessment helps determine the most appropriate treatment.

๐Ÿ’Š How We Can Help

If eligible, the pharmacist may:

๐Ÿฉบ Assess your symptoms and medical history

๐Ÿงช Consider a throat swab test where appropriate

๐Ÿ’Š Supply antibiotics only if clinically indicated

๐Ÿ’ง Provide advice on pain relief, hydration, and selfโ€‘care

๐Ÿ“ค Refer you to your GP or urgent care if needed

๐Ÿ”’ Consultations are confidential and carried out in a private consultation room.

โš ๏ธ When to Seek Urgent Medical Help

Please seek urgent medical advice if:

โŒ You have difficulty breathing or severe difficulty swallowing

โŒ You are drooling, have severe neck stiffness, or cannot open your mouth properly

โŒ You have a very high fever or feel seriously unwell

โŒ Symptoms last longer than 7 days, worsen, or keep returning
